    Overview

    London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the largest and busiest airport in the UK. It is the world's second busiest airport in terms of total passenger traffic and it handles more international passengers than any other airport in the world. The airport is owned and operated by BAA. Heathrow is located 14 miles (22 km) west of Central London and has 5 terminals.

    Terminals

  • Terminal 1 is home to Heathrow's second largest carrier BMI and airlines belonging to the Star Alliance. It will be closed around 2013/14.
  • Terminal 2 is closed for rebuilding, expected to open in 2014 as the home for Star Alliance.
  • Terminal 3 was opened as The Oceanic Terminal in 1961 to handle flight departures for long-haul routes. Virgin Atlantic are assigned their own dedicated check-in area, known as 'Zone A'
  • Terminal 4 is situated to the south of the southern runway next to the cargo terminal. Now home to the SkyTeam alliance as well as some unaffiliated carriers. It can host 45 airlines.
  • Terminal 5 situated between the northern and southern runways at the western end of the site and is exclusively used by British Airways as their global hub. A dedicated motorway spur has been built from the M25 between junctions 14 and 15 to the terminal, including a 3,800 space multi-storey car park.

    Public Transport

  • Heathrow Express is a non-stop train service directly to London's Paddington station, departing every 15 minutes for the 15 minute journey, either from Heathrow Terminal 5 station or Heathrow Central station (Terminals 1, 2, 3).
  • Heathrow Connect is a stopping train service to Paddington, departing every 30 minutes for the 25-minute journey. Lovated in the Heathrow Central station (Terminal 1,2,3) and Terminal 4.
  • London Underground Piccadilly has four tube stations to serve the airport Terminals 1,2,3 and Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. The standard journey time to Central London is 40–50 minutes.
  • Coach services operated by National Express offer long-distance services to various parts of the UK, including Victoria Coach Station in London.
  • Inter-terminal transport to Terminal 4 is by Heathrow Connect trains or bus and to Terminal 5 is by Heathrow Express trains or bus. Terminals 1,2,3 are within walking distance of each other.
